چکیده

Maintaining self-sustaining populations of zoo and aquarium collections can be challenged when natural reproduction fails within mixed-sex populations; however, reproductive success sometimes restored with the application technologies. Among a population three female one male Zebra Sharks ( Stegostoma tigrinum ), production young failed despite constant presence two females. To determine if assisted techniques could used to rescue sexual reproduction, artificial insemination was performed in singleton twice over three-year period using freshly collected semen. Hatching for eggs laid by all females monitored compare modes. After first (December 15 th , 2011), 143 yolked resulted no sexually produced offspring four genetically-confirmed, parthenogenetic offspring. second (September 24 2013), 62 offspring, 18 33 days after insemination, > 213 post-insemination. For housed male, resulted. All at least hatched parthenote. This study successfully employed circumvent barriers Sharks. With further development, represents powerful tool that maintaining genetic diversity animals aquaria conservation-based breeding programs elasmobranchs.

Corrigendum: Switch from sexual to parthenogenetic reproduction in a zebra shark

Parthenogenesis is a natural form of asexual reproduction in which embryos develop in the absence of fertilisation. Most commonly found in plants and invertebrate organisms, an increasing number of vertebrate species have recently been reported employing this reproductive strategy. Here we use DNA genotyping to report the first demonstration of an intra-individual switch from sexual to partheno...

Artificial Insemination

A GROUP of dairymen in New Jersey organized in 1938 the first cooperative in the United States for the artificial insemination of their cows. This method of serving females without natural mating has since become one of the most significant programs for livestock improvement in the history of American agriculture. A great deal of research has been done on all phases. A basic contribution was th...

Artificial insemination in marsupials.

Assisted breeding technology (ART), including artificial insemination (AI), has the potential to advance the conservation and welfare of marsupials. Many of the challenges facing AI and ART for marsupials are shared with other wild species. However, the marsupial mode of reproduction and development also poses unique challenges and opportunities. For the vast majority of marsupials, there is a ...

Artificial Insemination in Swine

The world population is 6.4 billion people approximately and is constantly growing. In this context, there is the expectation that it will reach 8.1 billion in 2030 and nine billion in 2050. In the next 25 years, this population growth will demand some 50% increase in food production. So, the world will be required some 53% increase in meat production, therefore elevating from 367 to 562 millio...

Artificial Insemination

[2] Artificial insemination is a relatively simple medical procedure by which semen obtained by masturbation is deposited by means of a syringe in or near the cervix of the woman's uterus. Artificial insemination is of two basic types: homologous insemination, when the semen is obtained from the husband (AIH); and heterologous insemination, when the semen is obtained from a donor (AID). AIH is ...
